Auckland Learning Centre

Seniornet (Auckland) Inc. holds regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month (except January) at 10:00 a.m. in the Onehunga R.S.A., Princess Street, Onehunga. Guest speakers talk on a computer-related topic of general interest after which we have morning tea and a chance to mingle.

If you are interested in joining our society we look forward to seeing you at a monthly meeting in the Onehunga R.S.A. Our next meeting will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday 9 June 2015. If you decide to join you can do so by completing the enclosed membership application form and take it to the meeting or, alternatively, posting it together with the appropriate fee (made out to Seniornet (Auckland) Inc.) to the Membership Secretary.

In order to enrol in any of the courses it is necessary to be a paid up member of the society. Course content is shown under Courses below. To enrol, contact the course co-ordinator at a monthly meeting or by phone. It is a requirement that members have access to a computer for practice.

Visitors are welcome at monthly meetings. Come along and say hello and see what we do.

Descriptions of Courses and Workshops

  • Advanced Word Processing 2010 or 2013: (4 x 2-hrs $20).
    Intermediate Word Processing is a pre-requisite. This powerful word processing application is used for creating reference manuals and reports with numbered headings, figures, graphics, advanced tables and indexes. Templates and mail merge will inspire you to practise.

  • Basic Word Processing 2010 or 2013: (4 x 2-hrs $20).
    This is an essential course to follow on from Windows 7 Introduction. Basic Word is the most used Word program, and will increase your confidence in using the Ribbon, files and folders, and saving documents into devices. It has a practical application to all other programs.
     
  • Computer Maintenance Windows 7: (1 x 2-hrs $5).
    In this course you will learn about caring for your computer, inside and out; Disk Clean, Hard Drive Scan, Defragmentation, Antivirus, Deleting unnecessary files, Windows Up-date, Back-up. Intermediate Word Processing 2010/2013 is a prerequisite.

  • Digital Cameras: 3 x 2-hrs $15).
    Bring your camera to the Digital photography course. Learn about the basics of film, optics, flash and cameras. Read directions; take lots of shots, photograph what you love to photograph, focus on composition. Pre-requisite Introduction to Computing Windows 7/8.
     
  • Digitise Your Transparencies: (1 x 2-hrs $5).
    Learn to use the Endeavour Slide Scanner to transform transparencies into photographs. Available for hire at $5 per month.
     
  • E-mail or Electronic mail - Windows Live Mail, Office 2010/2013 Outlook, Windows 8 Mail, Gmail: (3 x 2-hrs $15).
    E-mail is the most frequently used service on the Internet. Send, receive, file and forward email messages; record coming events in the calendar; and attach digital files to your messages. Pre-requisite Introduction to Computing Windows 7/8.

  • Family Search - Genealogy: (3 x 2-hrs $15).
    This is an introduction to Genealogy for members who are interested in their family history. Trace your ancestry using records of Births, Deaths, Marriage, Census, Electoral Rolls, Parish Records etc and record appropriate information. Pre-requisite Basic Word Processing 2010/2013.
     
  • Google Earth: (1 x 2-hrs $5).
    Review of Main Menu, Navigating; Find your home and see it on street view, Route directions, Distance measurements, Maps, Historic images, View sky, moon and planets. Pre-requisite Basic Word Processing 2010/2013.
     
  • Greeting Cards in Word 2010: (3 x 2-hrs $15).
    At Intermediate Word level. Create and personalise your own Greeting, Birthday, and Christmas cards. Basic Word Processing 2010/2013 is a prerequisite.

  • Intermediate Word Processing 2010 or 2013: (4 x 2-hrs $20).
    This course requires a thorough understanding of Basic Word Processing 2010/2013. Techniques of Editing, Formatting, Navigation and Layout, Tables, Drawing and Graphics will be explored.
     
  • Internet Banking:(1 x 2-hrs $5).
    This new one day workshop will give you confidence to perform Online Banking at home via the Internet. It is absolutely safe and is done by millions each day. We show you how to Register for Online Banking with ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwi Bank or Westpac. A prerequisite is using Internet or attending the course Internet Basics.
     
  • Internet Basics - Internet Explorer or Google: (3 x 2-hrs $15).
    Learn Internet Basics - key words and URLs for Web browsing to explore and understand the power of the Internet. Pre-requisite Introduction to Computing Windows 7/8.
     
  • Introduction to Computing Windows 7: (3 x 2-hrs Free).
    The Windows 7 Introduction Course is suited to members with little or no experience with a computer and for those who are moving from the XP Operating System. You will meet the Ribbon in WordPad, a Windows Word processing application that will build your confidence ready to tackle Basic Word Processing 2010/2013. Repeat course Fee $20.
     
  • Introduction to Computing Windows 8 Part 1: (4 x 2-hrs Free).
    The Windows 8 Introduction Course is suited to members with little or no experience with a computer and for those who are moving from Windows 7 or the XP Operating Systems. You will meet the Ribbon in WordPad, a Windows Word processing application that will build your confidence ready to tackle Basic Word Processing 2010/2013. Repeat course Fee $20.
     
  • Introduction to Computing Windows 8 Part 2: (4 x 2-hrs $20).
    For competent computer users who have just moved to Windows 8 or for those who have completed Introduction to Computing Windows 8. Explore lock screen, desk-top, and tiles and apps on Microsoft’s Start screen.
     
  • iPad IOS 8 Basic: (4 x 2-hrs $20).
    It is essential that participants already own an Apple iPad or iPhone and bring it to the course. The Operating System is the same.
     
  • Legacy 7.5 program: (4 x 2-hrs $20).
    Legacy is a free Genealogical program showing various ways of handling and presenting your family history data .Download at home. Pre-requisite Introduction to Computing Windows 7/8.
     
  • Managing Digital Images: (1 x 2-hrs $5).
    This is a brief one session course on how to handle images that you may collect from a camera, scanner, email or the internet. You will be given tips on downloading images, naming and arranging files, finding lost files and adding comments to files. Covered are methods of viewing images, simple editing of images and emailing images. You will be shown how to import images into Word and manipulating in Word to edit, add titles, crop, add borders and adjust colour, brightness and contrast. Advice on printing and backup will be given. Pre-requisite Basic Word Processing 2010/2013.
     
  • Photo Editing PhotoImpact 8: 6 x 2-hrs $30).
    Photo Editing covers the manipulation, enhancement, and repair of digital photos using PhotoImpact 8. If you have already taken this course, consider enrolling again, for your enlightment. Basic Word 2010/2013 and File Management Windows 7 Pt 1 are pre-requisites.
     
  • PowerPoint 2010 Pt 1, Pt 2, Pt 3: (4 x 2-hrs $20).
    Make personal slide show presentations to bring your photos alive with Formatting and Editing, Drawing and Graphics, Transitions and Animations, and Sound. Basic Word Processing 2010/2013 is a pre-requisite.

  • Publisher 2010 or 2013: (4 x 2-hrs $20).
    Create and share publications - flyers, newsletters, calendars, postcards, certificates and greeting cards more easily. Basic Word Processing 2010/2013 is a pre-requisite.

  • SketchUp: (1 x 2-hrs $5).
    A fascinating program introducing 3D into drawings. Just the thing for that 3D printer. Pre-requisite Basic Word Processing 2010/2013.
     
  • Spreadsheets Excel 2010: (3 x 2-hrs $15).
    Excel is a powerful spreadsheet application that allows users to produce tables containing calculations and graphs for practical tasks e.g. address lists, recording income and expenditure, budgeting. Basic Word Processing 2010/2013 is a pre-requisite.
     
  • TradeMe: (3 x 2-hrs $15).
    Register on line in order to buy and sell a wide range of items and turn unwanted goods into valuable cash. Basic Word 2010/2013 and being a regular user of Email are prerequisites.

  • Windows 7 File Management: (4 x 2-hrs $20).
    This critical and challenging course requires a thorough understanding of Basic Word Processing and is not suitable for beginners. Organise Windows File Explorer in a tree structure for drives, files and folders. Being able to find files instantly is essential for efficient computing.
